Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My hands have been shaking for several months, and I am only 42 years old. I have always thought Parkinson’s disease was something that affects older people. It started with a slight tremor in my right hand during stressful situations, but now the shaking is constant and is interfering with my work as a dental hygienist. My patients have noticed, and I feel embarrassed. I am also having trouble with fine motor skills, such as buttoning shirts and writing.
My mother had essential tremor, but this feels different. My sleep is terrible because I am constantly moving at night and even kicking my husband. I am feeling depressed and worried about how my two young children will react to seeing me like this. I have read that women can develop Parkinson’s disease earlier due to hormonal factors. Is this true?
What tests are used to confirm the diagnosis? Are there treatments available that will not affect my fertility since we want to have another baby? I need answers soon because I am afraid of losing my job and health insurance. Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement and muscle control. It can indeed affect younger individuals, and hormonal factors may contribute to earlier onset in some women. The symptoms you are experiencing—such as hand tremors, difficulty with fine motor skills, and sleep disturbances- are important signs that require a thorough evaluation by a neurologist.
To diagnose Parkinson’s disease, doctors typically rely on a combination of your medical history, neurological examinations, and specialized imaging tests. These may include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or a dopamine transporter scan (DaTscan), which can help distinguish Parkinson’s disease from other conditions with similar symptoms.
There are treatment options available that are unlikely to affect your fertility. Medications such as Levodopa and Dopamine agonists are commonly used to manage symptoms effectively. However, it is essential to discuss all treatment options with your healthcare provider, especially considering your desire to have another child, so that you can choose a plan that balances symptom control with your family planning goals. In addition to medication, managing stress and symptoms through lifestyle changes can be very helpful. Physical therapy can improve mobility and fine motor skills, while counseling or support groups may assist with the emotional challenges you are facing.
It is important to seek medical attention promptly to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care. Early intervention can improve the quality of life and help you maintain your work and family responsibilities. Please consult a neurologist as soon as possible to discuss your symptoms and concerns.
I hope this helps.
Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
