Is it concerning to experience light bleeding one week after a dilation and curettage?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had an incomplete abortion, after which the doctor performed a D and C (dilation and curettage) one week ago. I have been experiencing light bleeding up until now. I underwent laboratory tests before the procedure. Is this normal, or is there something I should be concerned about?

Hi,

We welcome you to icliniq family.

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation.

I understand your concern.

Light bleeding for a few days after a dilation and curettage (D and C) is normal. It is usually heaviest on the first day or two and then gradually tapers off. If you are still experiencing light bleeding one week after your procedure, this is still within the normal range. However, if the bleeding becomes heavier or you experience any other symptoms, such as fever, chills, or severe cramping, you should contact your doctor. Here are some points to consider about bleeding after this procedure:

  1. The amount of bleeding can vary from woman to woman, and it may be heavier if you had a larger pregnancy or if there was more tissue to remove during the procedure.
  2. If you are also taking blood thinners, the bleeding may be heavier. The bleeding should gradually decrease over time.
  3. If it becomes heavier or if you experience any other symptoms, please get in touch with your doctor.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
