What can cause a sudden surge in bloating and gas?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Lately, I have been experiencing excessive gas and bloating, which seem to worsen after meals. My stomach often feels distended, and I am passing gas much more frequently than usual – sometimes up to 20 times a day. I am uncomfortable and embarrassed about this condition. These symptoms are affecting my social life and work. I am hesitant to eat out or attend meetings for fear of embarrassing situations. I have tried over-the-counter remedies and eliminating certain foods, but nothing seems to help.

  • Could this be a sign of a more serious digestive problem?

  • What tests or treatments would you recommend to address these issues?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hi.

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

  • Common conditions that could cause excessive gas and bloating include

    • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

    • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) .

    • Lactose intolerance.

    • Food intolerances or sensitivities.

    • Gastrointestinal infections.

To identify the underlying cause, it is suggested to do some tests:

  • Lactose intolerance test - This test measures how well your body can digest lactose, a sugar found in dairy products. Consuming dairy can lead to gas and bloating if you're lactose intolerant.

  • Hydrogen breath test - To diagnose SIBO and carbohydrate malabsorption issues. It measures the amount of hydrogen in your breath after consuming a sugar solution.

  • Stool analysis.

  • Blood tests to check for celiac disease, food allergies, or other conditions that might cause digestive symptoms.

  • Endoscopy or colonoscopy to examine the inside of your digestive tract for any abnormalities.

Treatment options might include:

  • Dietary changes - working with a dietitian can help you identify and eliminate trigger foods from your diet. A low-FODMAP( diet, which reduces certain fermentable carbohydrates) is often effective for managing IBS symptoms.

  • Probiotics - These can help balance the gut bacteria and may alleviate symptoms of gas and bloating.

  • Depending on the diagnosis, you might be prescribed antibiotics for SIBO, enzyme supplements for lactose intolerance, or medications to manage IBS symptoms.

  • Regular exercise, stress management techniques like yoga or meditation, and eating smaller, and more frequent meals can also help improve digestive health.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
