What is the treatment and prognosis of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 45-year-old woman who has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor, specifically a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). I am seeking more information about this condition, its characteristics, and potential treatment options. Can you provide insights into the nature of diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas, the available treatments, and what I can expect in terms of prognosis and quality of life? Additionally, are there any support resources or clinical trials that may be beneficial for someone in my situation? Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is an aggressive type of childhood cancer that forms in the brainstem. They are very rare and almost always occur in the pediatric population. Its manifestations include diplopia, ataxia, dysmetria, dysarthria, etc. The treatment options are the use of steroids such as Dexamethasone, which are given, and the goal of treatment is the stabilization of neurological symptoms until possible neurosurgical biopsy or radiation therapy. The prognosis and quality of life of DPIG are dismal due to the absence of effective therapies. This tumor is the principal cause of death among brain tumors affecting childhood and possibly adults. Most patients are diagnosed before seven years of age. After diagnosis, median survival is usually nine months. Only 10% live for more than two years.

For resources or clinical trial treatments, you may search for educational and informative methods of treatments online or university-funded research and development of brain malignancies in your nearest home country.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
