How to manage a 10-month-old baby's loose stools?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My 10-month-old daughter has been experiencing loose motions since yesterday. The stool is mostly watery and has different colors. Today in the afternoon, I gave her Steflora suspension. After that, she has had four bowel movements until now. I have now given O2M. She is on breastfeeding and had dish made from raw or green bananas today but no baby foods. What medications should she be given? What things need to be taken care of? What can she eat now?

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I understand your concern.

Loose motions at this age are usually due to viral infections. As per the limited information provided, the very first thing is to stop O2M (Ofloxacin and Metronidazole) syrup, as it contains an antibiotic that is not needed. The medications are as follows:

  1. Continue Steflora (Bacillus clausii spores) suspension.
  2. Administer oral rehydration solutions(ORS) - 2.5 to 3.4 fluid ounces (75 to 100 ml) after each loose motion for three days. No other medication is required at this stage.

Things that need to be taken care of include monitoring urine output and ensuring she stays well hydrated. For her diet, give regular blended food such as banana, rice, potatoes, ragi, apple juice or apple stew, soups, and others. Continue breastfeeding. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent. Get the following stool tests done:

  1. Stool analysis routine.
  2. Stool rota virus.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Here, presently, I could not find ORS. Can she be given plain water? Can loose motion be due to teething?

Hi,

Glad to have you back!

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

I understand your concern.

ORS is very common and comes with many different brand names or the generic name oral rehydration solution. If you are not getting the ready-to-drink form, then get powder packets. Take care to prepare it exactly as per the instructions on the packet. Teething may give rise to diarrhea, but it is an indirect cause. During teething, kids put everything in their mouth to bite on it. If, at any time, those articles or hands are not clean, it can cause diarrhea.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at icliniq.

Thank you.
