My stool is yellow and uncontrollable, and I have nausea at times after taking antibiotics. What should I do?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had bad stomach cramps for one week and diarrhea for four days. It is yellow and uncontrollable. I have nausea at times. I had taken Amoxicillin for a wisdom tooth infection for two weeks. I am really worried. I have also got a mild fever. Not sure if it is a virus or something else. Really concerned about not getting better. I can eat and drink but have stomach cramps and diarrhea and feel a burning pain in the stomach 60 % of the day. I find it difficult to sleep.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed your case history, and there are two possibilities:

  • Drug-induced diarrhea (antibiotics-associated diarrhea).
  • Infective diarrhea (relatively less likely).

I suggest the following:

  • Increase your water intake, have a soft diet, and stay hydrated.
  • Tablet Mebeverine (anti-diarrheal) 135 mg half an hour before each meal three times a day is a very good anti-spasmodic which will help relieve pain and improve your loose stools.
  • Take regular yogurt and banana. Naturally occurring probiotics help to regain normal good bacteria in your gut.
  • If there is no improvement with the above, get a stool examination for infection, then you may need antibiotics.

But in my opinion, the recent use of antibiotics is a less likely chance of infective diarrhea.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Do you think it is anything serious, like a stomach ulcer?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Cramps and loose stools are usually not because of stomach ulcers. A stomach ulcer causes upper abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. For precautions for your stomach, you can have:

  1. Syrup Gaviscon 10 ml (Aluminum hydroxide) after every meal for three to four days.
  2. Capsule Pantoprazole 40 mg (proton pump inhibitor) once daily a half hour before breakfast for three to four days.
  3. These two medicines can protect and treat your stomach.
