Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My baby is having diarrhea since last night. Today he has gone poop eight times. He is mostly crying. His age is 7 months. I have given ORS to him.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
The most common causes of diarrhea below 1 year age of a baby are viral diarrhea. Rotavirus diarrhea is very common and frequent. Rotavirus is a virus that spreads through the contamination of food, improperly cleaned utensils and poor hygiene. Please specify whether your baby is having watery (resembling rice water) diarrhea. In rotavirus infection, diarrhea is watery, frequent, and it is of considerable volume. You have done the right thing by giving ORS (oral rehydration solution). Give it plenty, every time after your baby passes stool, also give ORS for every 15 minutes.
If he vomits, wait for 10 minutes and give ORS. You should also continue breastfeeding and give semi-solid and solid foods according to her diet schedule. Do not stop solid foods. Maintaining water and electrolyte balance (by starting ORS early and frequently) is the primary treatment. You should count the number of urine output of your baby. If it remains normal, it is fine, but if the urine output number falls, then it means that there is dehydration which is alarming and needs more frequent ORS. You can also give him probiotics like Econorm (Saccharomyces Bouraldii) or Enteroplus sachet (Lactobacilus rhamnosus) dissolved in water or milk twice a day. For abdominal pain (crying) you can provide Colpep (Dimethicone with Fennel oil) or Decolic drops (Dicyclomine with Simethicone) 10 to 12 drops when needed. If the condition worsens or dehydration persists (baby will be irritable at first, then there will be drowsiness with sunken eyes, less urine output, and rapid pulse), immediately consult with a doctor or take him to a hospital without any delay. Stool analysis and culture sensitivity can be done. Preventive measures are:
