What treatments help manage diabetic neuropathy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had type 1 diabetes for 15 years and use an insulin pump, but my HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) is still 8.0 percent. Recently, I have started feeling numbness in my toes, which my doctor believes may be diabetic neuropathy. Could you explain how this condition is diagnosed and whether tighter glucose control could reverse or stop its progression? Are there any other specific treatments, like medications or therapies, that can help manage these symptoms? Also, should I consider additional tests to rule out other complications linked to long-term diabetes?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Diabetic neuropathy is diagnosed through physical exams and tests like nerve conduction studies and electromyography. Tighter glucose control can help slow its progression and may improve symptoms. Please check with your healthcare provider so that they may consider pain relievers, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants, which can help manage symptoms. Physical therapy and lifestyle changes like regular exercise and a balanced diet can be beneficial. Consider tests for kidney function, eye exams, and cardiovascular health to rule out other complications.

Please book a consultation with me if you would like more detailed information on any of these points or if you have other questions.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
