What is the reason for abnormal sugar levels even after taking medicines?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My fasting sugar is 180 mg/dL and postprandial is 165 mg/dL. I am diabetic and take one tablet Janumet before breakfast and another after dinner. Why is this abnormal? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The blood sugar levels are still raised as your dosage must be insufficient. I would like to advise you to tell me the dosage of tablet Janumet that you are taking along with tablet Gluconorm. According to your fasting and postprandial blood sugar, I would then be able to adjust a proper medication and dosage for you. If you have any issues following up with me, you can meet your nearest physician or your family doctor, who can do it for you. Also, you should know that exercising and diet restrictions have an important role in maintaining your blood sugars and you should follow them religiously. There are two reasons to develop diabetes. One, because of pancreas not secreting enough insulin and two, our body tissues becoming non-responsive to the circulating insulin, because of a sedentary exercise less high-calorie diet that we follow for years together. That is why exercise is seen to improve insulin action in many patients and has helped us to keep the dosage to a bare minimum. Since you are overweight, I feel you should concentrate on losing weight by doing regular exercise and following a strict diabetic diet. It may help you to get off the medications or at least not let your present situation progress. Take care.
