How often the blood sugar and blood pressure of a 48-year-old male should be checked?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello,

My 48-year-old father was diagnosed to be diabetic and hypertensive a few months back. He works as a bank manager. The doctor has asked us to check the blood sugar levels and blood pressure using a blood pressure monitor. What model of home blood pressure monitor is recommended? And why? Is a digital blood pressure monitor better? The same question is for monitoring blood sugar levels. Please help us to buy a good brand. How often should we check these parameters?

Answered by Dr. Rajesh Jain

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

No glucometer is accurate. I suggest you check blood sugar at certified laboratories only.

For emergencies, you can use branded glucometers available easily at pharmacies.

I suggest you

1. Check his blood pressure twice a day and maintain a chart.

2. Check his blood sugar once a week (fasting and post-prandial).

Thank you.
