How can one manage weight in diabetes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been living with type 1 diabetes for the last 15 years. Recently, I have started losing a lot of weight and feeling dizzy. My latest blood work showed an HbA1c of 10.5%, fasting blood sugar of 240 mg/dL, and a CBC indicating low hemoglobin levels at 11.2 g/dL. I am currently taking Insulin aspart three times a day. I am concerned about these symptoms and their impact on my overall health. Could these be related to my diabetes management or something else? What should I do next?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query and understand your concern.

Unintentional weight loss in diabetes often suggests that your body is not getting enough insulin to properly use glucose for energy, causing it to break down muscle and fat instead. This can also contribute to feelings of dizziness. The low hemoglobin level (11.2 g/dL) could point to anemia, which might exacerbate your dizziness and fatigue, but the symptoms can also be due to other issues. So I suggest you plan for the following:

thyroid profile, vitamin D, vitamin B12.

Based on the results, we can plan further for medicines. Also, you should increase the dose of your insulin. Increase it by two units, avoid rice-made items, eat chapati, eat a fiber-rich diet, and ensure you get adequate sleep. Meditation can also help you. Please give more details about your dinner time and post-food sugar levels.

I hope that you got your answer.

Regards.
