Hi doctor,

I suffer from postpartum depression. My child frequently cries while I am away from him, which keeps me awake at night. I am unable to handle him alone. So, I feel very depressed about it. My husband helps me in my household chores. My kid is small and I am taking care of him cautiously. Kindly help me to come out from my postpartum depression.

I can understand your situation. Parenting is a tough job but you are lucky enough that your husband helps you to deal with your household chores. You may have postpartum depression. There is non pharmacological management for your depression, you should try to follow the below guidelines to deal with it. It will help you.

  1. You should do exercises daily for 30 to 45 minutes preferably by walking. It will uplift your mood.
  2. You should do meditation for 20 minutes daily. Sit in one place in a comfortable position and try to concentrate on your normal breathing, do not stop or force yourself to stop your thoughts.
  3. You should eat healthy home cooked foods, and avoid junk foods.
  4. You must drink enough water.
  5. You should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills or language or musical instruments.
  6. You should take enough 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily.
  7. Take the help of your elder for it. It is better if some elder like your parents or your husband's parents stay with you and helps you to take care of your baby. so you will get a break.
  8. You must avoid tobacco or alcohol or any substance abuse.
  9. Be bold and confident. If you still have symptoms that persist after following the advice for 4 to 6 weeks, then you need to start medications for a short duration.
