This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 40-year-old woman whose husband has been struggling with depression since being laid off from his job. What cognitive techniques or strategies can I encourage him to try to help improve his mental state and outlook? I am looking for practical ways to help bolster his cognitive skills and ability to manage the depressive symptoms he has been experiencing.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. I can understand your situation and your concern about your husband. He may have major depressive disorder. There is non-pharmacological management for his depression, he should try to follow the below guidelines to deal with it. It will help him.

  1. He should do exercises daily for 30 to 45 minutes.
  2. He should do meditation for 20 minutes daily.
  3. He should eat healthy home-cooked foods, and avoid junk foods.
  4. He must drink enough water.
  5. He should spend quality time with friends and family daily or do video calls.
  6. He should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills, languages, or musical instruments.
  7. He should get seven to eight hours of sleep daily.
  8. He must avoid tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse.
  9. Live your life, do not just spend it.
  10. Be bold and confident.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please, let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
