Can gap between implant and abutment screw cause infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a titanium dental implant installed for a missing upper molar tooth. The thread length of the implant was 5 mm.

I have some query regarding it.

  1. Will a gingival height of abutment of 1 mm be sufficient?
  2. The implant screw is 5 mm, and the abutment screw is 1 mm. Will this 4 mm air gap lead to the risk of infection and pain?

Kindly guide me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your queries and can understand your concern.

I suppose you are confusing the different parts of the implant. The abutment with a gingival height of 1 mm will have an additional shank inserted inside the implant. The 1 mm of the abutment screw is the part visible above the level of the implant. And so, there are no chances of an air gap between the implant and abutment screw. If there is a gap, the extreme accuracy of the implant system will seal it off and prevent leakage.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
