Can a brown pit in the upper lateral incisor be a cavity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a brown pit on the inside of one of my upper lateral incisors (I think it is called tooth number ten). My mother probed it with a toothpick, and that did not hurt - neither did it when I bit down with that tooth. I have got some erosion damage from earlier on. How can you tell if it is a cavity? I have also noticed discomfort between two molars (a wisdom tooth and a permanent molar). I guess those are called teeth numbers 31 and 32.

Please clarify.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It could be some food impaction between the molars. Use floss and mouthwash regularly. If you are worried about cavities, then get them checked by a dentist. The front lateral incisor does have a pit on the upper lateral incisors in many people. They are not cavities initially but may become in the future. So if you feel discomfort, then you can get it filled.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
