Can cleaning and dental injections be very painful?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19 years old and have always been terrified of needles. I have a cleaning appointment tomorrow. I know that I have a small cavity. Not sure if they are going to get it filled.

  1. So I wanted to know, what does the dental injection feel like?
  2. How painful is it on a scale of one to ten, and does it even go deep into the gum? I want to ensure what to expect from the dentist, as it has also helped in the past.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and can understand your concern.

There is no pain in dental cleaning, and you might have little sensitivity post-cleaning sometimes, which usually subsides within two weeks. So do not worry, you will be fine, and if there is a cavity, it is better to get it filled at the earliest, before it becomes deep and you start to get pain. As you said, it is a small cavity that can be filled without any pain.

Talking about injections, it is just a prick-like sensation and mainly depends on the dentist's skill. So to be specific, to grade it on a scale would be difficult, as it is very subjective and depends on the dentist's skill to make it as nonpainful as possible.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case you have any other doubts.

Thank you.
