Why do I have rashes after 2 weeks of cold and sore throat?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

For the past two weeks, I have had the following symptoms:

  1. Sore throat that feels inflamed and slightly swollen.
  2. A cough, sneezing, and a runny nose are constant.
  3. Severe aches in my joints, especially my right shoulder and wrist.
  4. My temperature keeps jumping from really high to low.
  5. Constant headache, dizziness, and fatigue.
  6. It hurts to swallow, and no matter what I drink or how much I drink, I feel constantly dehydrated,

Today I have come out in a rash; it is like red and purple pin pricks all over my body.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Body aches, petechiae (rashes), fatigue, and dehydration suggest a diagnosis of dengue fever, which may be associated with your other symptoms, including a sore throat and cough. To confirm that you need to undergo some tests, such as total blood count (platelet count), DLC (differential leucocyte count), Hb (haemoglobin), LFT (liver function test), and KFT (kidney function test).

Platelet count generally decreases in dengue fever. You need to hydrate yourself as much as you can and complete bed rest. Prevent yourself from mosquitoes as they are the carriers of this fever. It is a viral fever, so no specific medicines are needed.

You may take analgesics for aches like Paracetamol, and avoid Aspirin-containing drugs. You might have a fever in the beginning which you must have ignored. If symptoms get worse, you may need to see your family physician and may need hospitalization. Get your tests done and follow up as quickly as possible.

Thank you and take care.

Differential diagnosis

Differential diagnoses include Viral fever, Argentinian hemorrhagic fever, Hantavirus, Relapsing fever, Weil's syndrome.

Preventive measures

Preventive measures include protecting against mosquito bites.
