Is forgetfulness an early sign of dementia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My grandmother is 60 years old. She often forgets her everyday activities nowadays. Is this an early sign of dementia? What are the available treatment options for managing dementia? Are there any lifestyle changes needed that may help in preventing or slowing down its progression in an individual?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Memory loss and forgetfulness can be common as people age, but they can be early signs of dementia, especially when they interfere with daily activities and are associated with cognitive changes. Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with a decline in cognitive function (memory, thinking, reasoning, etc). Several treatment options (Donepezil and Rivastigmine) may help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Behavioral interventions, including cognitive stimulation therapy, can help improve cognitive function. Supportive care and management of comorbid conditions are essential for dementia patients. Psychosocial support can provide emotional support and practical guidance. Several lifestyle changes may help reduce the risk or slow down the progression of dementia, which include diet, exercise, mental stimulation, quality sleep, smoking, and chronic condition stabilizations.

I hope this helps you.

Revert in case of queries.

Regards.
