Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My grandmother is 75 years old. She often forgets her name as well as the names of her family members. Her memory is deteriorating badly. She also forgets to do her daily tasks and we all keep on telling her to do them every day. Does her condition indicate dementia? Does she require immediate medical consultation? How can we manage dementia in my grandmother?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for seeking help from a psychiatrist.
I can understand your situation and concern regarding your grandmother. Your grandmother may be suffering from dementia. Taking her to the nearest psychiatrist, physician, or neuro-physician is important for proper diagnosis and treatment. She requires urgent care and medication. Medication can help stabilize her condition and slow down the progression of dementia, but it cannot cure it. With the help of medication, we can control the symptoms of dementia. It is not advisable to manage this condition at home.
You must do the following investigation:
My advice:
Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent.
I would suggest starting with a tablet of Donepezil 5 mg to be taken once daily. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent. Other medications are available to treat her symptoms such as sleep disturbances, suspicious behavior, etc. She requires proper care and attention to manage her condition effectively.
I hope that you got your answer. Please let me know if you want some help.
Thank you.
