What could be the cause of delayed period in an 18-year-old female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female. My period's due date was four days back, and I had protected intercourse on the same day and took a pregnancy test after two days, which said negative, and after five days, I took another pregnancy test, which came back negative. Is it possible that I am pregnant? My due date was four days back now, today is the seventh day from my due date, and I still have not gotten my period. What should I do? I am very upset. Last month I had a lot of pain during periods my periods, which was unbearable, so the doctor gave me a painkiller injection on the first day. After that, there was light bleeding but not as heavy as before. Please advice.

Hello,

Welcom to icliniq.com.

You are a teenager still in the phase of development of the reproductive system. You can have irregular ovulatory or anovulatory cycles. Strict diet, hormonal Imbalance, sudden weight gain or weight loss, illness, contraceptives, and other medications can delay periods, so check for these. If you had protected intercourse, are you confirmed about condom burst, etc.? you can also have premenstrual syndrome or full pain menses. I suggest you take the following medicine.

1. Tablet Postan (Mefenamic acid) 500 mg eight hourly for three to five days as per symptoms.

2. To be on the safe side for your pregnancy status, you can have serum beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) to check your exact pregnancy status. I hope it will be negative as you said it was protected sex.

3. If negative, you can have the menstrual induction tablet Primolute - N (Norethisterone) 10 mg twice daily for five days and wait for bleeding for one to two weeks ).

4. To regulate cycles, have combined oral contraceptive pills for three months. These will regulate your cycles.

5. Healthy diet, daily walk, normal BMI (body mass index), and recreational activities.

I hope this will help you out.

Thank you.
