What could be the reason for a delay in periods for six weeks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have not had my periods in six weeks. I am recovering from an eating disorder but did not change anything from my diet (I did not eat less than normal but tried to eat intuitively). What should I do? Should I wait until my period comes back?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understand your concern. You can wait till you get the periods, or else kindly do the following tests:

1) Thyroid profile.

2) PAP (Papanicolaou test) smear of vaginal discharge for microbiology and others conditions like cervicitis.

3) Urine routine and culture test.

4) Hb (hemoglobin) level and peripheral smear study.

5) Abdomen and pelvis ultrasound.

This will narrow down your problem. You need treatment according to the results of tests. You may need antibiotics, analgesics, and antihistamines along with douching of the vagina with an antiseptic solution and vaginal pessary or ointment for five days. Partner treatment is of utmost importance.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.
