What causes a late period after a negative pregnancy test?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19 years old. My period ended last month. I had protected sex a day after it. However, my partner doubted that some of the semen escaped through the base of the condom. Hence, he rechecked the condom, and no punctures or holes were present. I took an I-pill after 48 hours and before 72 hours of having sex. I started having cramps and light bleeding after some time. Blood flow was light at the beginning, but it increased gradually. This was my first time having intercourse. I have PCOS as well, which sometimes leads to irregular periods. I did the pregnancy test using a kit that came out negative. Still, I have not got my period. Why?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have done protected intercourse on a safe day, as this was the fifth day of your cycle, so there was no need to take I-pill (Levonorgestrel). You are 100 %, and there are no chances of pregnancy. In a menstrual cycle of 28 days, 14 days are always safe, and the other 14 days are unsafe. Seven days before and after the period are always safe.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

When will I get my periods?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You will get your periods 20 days after your withdrawl bleeding.
