My period is late after unprotected sex. Is this due to irregular cycle or pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unsafe sex (pull out method) last July 6, a day after my last period ended. My last period was from June 29 to July 5, and my next period was supposed to start on July 31, yet I am still not on my monthly period right now. I was just wondering if there is a chance that I am pregnant, or I am just having an irregular period again (I actually have irregular period sometimes 1-3 days late). And in case I am pregnant, what are the earliest possible signs and symptoms? Or if it is unlikely that I am pregnant, then is it normal to experience an irregular period sometimes?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I fully understand your concern and will surely help you. For getting pregnant, ideally sperms are required inside a female's vagina. These sperms have to meet an egg, fertilize it and the fertilized egg needs to get implanted in the uterus. It is a complex process. In your case, although pull out method is not a reliable method but since it was just a day after your period, it was not the time when your eggs were ready for fertilization. So you have a rare possibility of pregnancy. However, since you are having a delayed period and to put your concern to rest, you may undertake a urine pregnancy test with the first urine sample for accurate results. Do not drink too much fluid prior to your test. Also, adhere to all guidelines written on the package of the pregnancy test kit.
