Could the positive pregnancy test after taking Medroxyprogesterone indicate pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had my period about a month ago. Usually, my period arrives around the same time each month, but this time, it did not come on schedule. Concerned, I took two pregnancy tests about five days apart, but both came back negative. I then underwent pelvic sonography, which showed normal results, and a thyroid test, which was also negative. Despite this, my period still had not arrived, so I decided to take five Medroxyprogesterone tablets from four days ago until two days ago in an attempt to induce menstruation. However, even after waiting for eleven days, my period has not shown up. Feeling worried, I took another pregnancy test using a Prega News kit on the seventeenth of this month, and it showed a positive result. Additionally, I have been experiencing sensitive breasts and abdominal pain similar to menstrual cramps, but still, there are no signs of my period.

I am uncertain about whether I am pregnant or not, considering the positive result of the pregnancy test. If I am pregnant, could the Deviry tablets have affected the baby? Throughout this entire period, I have been sexually active. I have read that Deviry is not a contraceptive, and I am unsure if it could cause a false positive on a pregnancy test. Should I conclude that I am pregnant, or could there be another explanation?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

The ability to detect a pregnancy on an ultrasound scan depends on the strength of the ultrasound machine and the age of the pregnancy. Usually, most abdominal ultrasound scans can detect a pregnancy by six weeks after your last period, while transvaginal ultrasound scans can detect a pregnancy by five weeks past your last period. Given the timing of your ultrasound scan, it may have been too early to accurately determine if you were pregnant or not. Since your pregnancy test has now shown positive results, you have a few options. You can opt to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound scan for a more accurate confirmation, or you can wait until you are six weeks past your last period (you are currently at five weeks and three days) and then undergo a pelvic ultrasound scan.

Based on the information you provided, it seems likely that you are pregnant.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
