What causes a late period, but a negative pregnancy test?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 13 days late on my period, and I have cramps in my legs, pain in my lower back, and feeling very tired. I have tested negative, and I want to know if I can get pregnant even though I get negative test results.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I advise you to take a blood pregnancy test to check your pregnancy status, as sometimes, in a very early pregnancy, a urine test cannot detect pregnancy hormones. If there is pain and bleeding with a positive blood pregnancy test, immediately report to a specialist doctor to evaluate ectopic pregnancy outside the uterus. Follow up with beta HCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) report if negative.

You can give menstrual induction with the help of the tablet Primolut N (Norethisterone) 10 mg twice daily for five days and wait for bleeding for one to two weeks. If irregular periods continue, you might need an investigation. Check for sudden weight gain and abnormal hair growth along with irregular periods. Strenuous exercise, diet, weight gain or loss, illness, medications, and hormonal imbalance can delay periods. In case of a positive pregnancy test, immediately report to doctor for detailed evaluation.

I hope this information will be helpful.

Thank you.
