Can contraceptive pills cause delayed periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been taking Microgynon 30, a contraceptive pill, for approximately a year and a half. During this time, my periods have generally been regular. However, in the past couple of months, I have noticed a slight delay in the arrival of my periods. This is not the first time I have experienced a delay in my menstrual cycle, as I have had similar occurrences in the past. Last month, I also experienced a delayed period. Currently, my only medication is Microgynon 30.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

If you are consistently taking the pills as prescribed, you do not need to worry. These pills contain hormones that suppress the body's natural hormone production, preventing ovulation and causing monthly periods known as withdrawal bleeding.

Based on the information provided, the only concern seems to be your weight. Your current weight is towards the upper limit of the normal range, so it would be beneficial to lose around two to three kilograms. Sudden increases in food intake or weight gain can lead to the conversion of excess fat into hormones, which can disrupt the hormonal balance. While it is normal for the timing of periods to vary by about more or less than seven days, hormonal variations can further disrupt the regularity over time.

To reduce weight:

  1. Avoid fasting and consuming junk food, fast food, and red meat. It is also advisable to reduce snacks between meals.

  2. Opt for low-calorie foods that are high in protein.

  3. Engage in regular exercise, particularly targeting the waist and hip areas. Activities like aerobics, yoga, and brisk walking (making sure to swing your arms) can be helpful. Aim to lose two to four kilograms per month. However, it is important not to rush the weight reduction process as it may be difficult to maintain.

Once you have successfully reduced at least 2.20462 to 4.40924 pounds, you should start noticing changes. hope this answer helped you,

Thank you.
