Are mild cramps during early pregnancy a matter of concern?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am three days late for my period and tested positive when I took the urine pregnancy test. I have slight cramps. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Cramps are normal in early pregnancy. The uterus is a small, 2.76 inches long closed muscular organ. A baby is like a foreign body in a small glassy sac. This will distend the cavity of the uterus. As the baby grows up, the distention of the uterus will increase, and so will the cramping sensation. This pain will gradually radiate to the thighs, hip bone, and back. This is due to the traction on the supports of the uterus. The pain would be intermittent in nature. If the pain is causing too much discomfort, have a consultation with your doctor. I suggest to have vaginal Progesterone (Natural Micronized) 200 mg twice a day till 12 weeks of pregnancy. Consult your doctor and take the medicine accordingly. This will relax the uterus, and relieve you of the pain. This will also reduce any chances of miscarriage if there is minimal bleeding inside. This will also support the decidual reaction and the baby will have a better implantation.

I hope this information will help you.

Please revert in case of more queries.

Thank you.
