What is the treatment for hip dysplasia in a baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My few months old baby was delivered by breech position. The doctor suggested taking a hip ultrasound. I am attaching her reports. Does she require any treatment?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

I went through her reports (the attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).

We take the lower limit of alpha angle as 60 degrees. The angle lower than this is suggestive of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Have you consulted any pediatric orthopedic surgeon who has examined the child clinically?

Kindly reply to the above question.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

The doctor said to wait for 3 months after an ultrasound. When the alpha angle improves then it does not need treatment. I have attached a scan report.

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I do not want to stress you. So basically, for diagnosing DDH, any single investigation is not reliable. We get an ultrasound, clinically examine the child and after 4 months of age get an x-ray. So, the diagnosis is made based on all these things. Moreover, the alpha angle is checked two to three times to look for the trend. If it is improving, then it is not DDH. Also, your child's value is very near to normal, so there is a high chance that it will improve.

I would suggest you let the child grow normally and do not panic. Keep the child under regular follow-up with the pediatric orthopedic surgeon and after 3 months, get an x-ray done.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.
