Can dark circles occur as a side effect of Adderall?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been taking Adderall for almost six months now, and one of the side effects I am experiencing is dark circles under my eyes. I take plenty of vitamins, drink enough water, and get plenty of sleep every day, but the dark circles persist. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the dark circles and perhaps an explanation for why I have them? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Chronic sleep deprivation is one of the most common causes of dark circles around the eye. Adderall (Amphetamine and Dextroamphetamine) is a drug that causes stimulation of the central nervous system (CNS), so it tricks your body and mind into thinking that you had enough sleep and that you do not need anymore. Unless you have any other symptoms (please state them).

I suggest you get more sleep and avoid energy drinks and coffee and refer to a psychiatrist so that he can lower the dose of Adderall you are taking.

Thank you.
