Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been struggling with dandruff and suspect it might be seborrheic dermatitis. I am interested in learning more about these conditions and how to effectively manage them. Can you provide insights into the differences between dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, common causes, and recommended treatments or lifestyle changes to alleviate symptoms and promote scalp health? Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff are the same thing. There are three common causes of seborrhea:
1. Increase in the fungal population of your skin which is called Malassezia, which is a normal flora of your skin.
2. Increase in sebum production from your scalp and changes in your immune system any imbalances amongst the three things will cause dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. You must wash your scalp daily. Avoid using oily products on your scalp and avoid stressful conditions as dermatitis also increases stress.
3. In severe cases and conditions, it can be because of immune abnormalities and other serious conditions such as HIV (human immunodeficiency syndrome). Otherwise, it tends to go with time. It has to be controlled in young people with the use of certain medications and shampoo.
I hope this information helps you.
Thank you.
