Can keratoconus cause eye problems, enhanced cylindrical power, and sensitivity to light?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I experience a few ocular symptoms like glaring and starbursts at night. Also, I can see haloes when I see circular-shaped light sources without eyeglasses. In addition, I have light sensitivity, which manifests as blotches after I see bright sources like tube light and lasts for 30 seconds. And I also have sensitivity to sunlight. Also, my cylindrical power increased from -1.5 to 3.5 cyl in four years. I have no blurring or double images, and my vision is normal. I also would like to add my history. I had lattice degeneration in both eyes three years back and underwent a barrage laser treatment. The spherical power was -5 D, and the cylindrical power was -3.50 cyl in both eyes. Do you think it is keratoconus? Or do you think there is some other problem? I am very tensed, and I am not able to focus on my studies. I have not undergone corneal topography tests or any cornea tests. Due to my examinations, I have postponed these investigation techniques. Please give your suggestions.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Since it is a disease with various signs, it can be ruled out by physical examination or by undergoing a few tests. However, this is a progressive disease that causes a progressive increase in cylindrical power, with progressive thinning of the cornea. Therefore, the condition will already be present in a person when they are below ten years old and progresses as age advances. All these signs have been combined because of retinal problems and discrepancies in cylindrical power. So do not worry, and I suggest you to follow the instructions. Take precautions not to rub your eyes. Avoid any trauma to the eyes. Use frequent lubricant eye drops. Use glasses as prescribed. Keratoconus is not the only reason for changes in cylindrical power. It can also be because of retinal problems. Also, take precautionary measures advised by your ophthalmic surgeon. All the best for your examinations, and get the test done after your examinations. I hope this helps. Kindly follow up with the reports. Take care.
