Can my high IgE levels cause dizziness or lightheadedness?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 40-year-old male. I experienced significant stress at work for two years and received my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Approximately 20 days after the vaccination, I began to experience unusual dizziness and lightheadedness. These symptoms progressively worsened, affecting my digestive system and causing anxiety.

I underwent multiple tests, including an X-ray, several blood tests, stool tests, and sonography, to determine the cause of my symptoms. Last year, my test results revealed several issues, including an elevated IgE (immunoglobulin E) level of 2000 IU/mL, grade 1 fatty liver, and gastritis.

Recently, I had an EEG (electrocardiogram) test that showed no abnormalities. Currently, I am only taking Paroxetine (for the past few months) to manage anxiety. Previously, I was on Pantoprazole and Mebeverine.

I would appreciate your opinion on whether my symptoms could be related to an allergy, given the consistently high IgE level. If so, what steps should I take?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Allergy could be a possible cause of your symptoms, though it seems somewhat unlikely. We should also consider the possibility of post-COVID-19 sequelae.

It is important to note that COVID-19 vaccines have been associated with symptoms such as the resurgence of allergies, dizziness, and lightheadedness. Therefore, we need to evaluate your hearing with the following tests:

  1. Pure tone audiogram.
  2. Electrocochleography.
  3. Short increment sensitivity index (SISI) test.

Additionally, for assessing allergies, have you experienced any of the following symptoms: runny nose, nasal congestion, facial pressure, sneezing, itching, or throat irritation?

You may also consider undergoing a skin prick allergy test to identify specific sensitivities.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I will take those tests as soon as possible and update you on the results. Regarding allergy symptoms, I frequently experience a dry nose, which can become painful due to the dryness. I also have some skin rashes on my scalp and around my mouth.

Regarding the elevated IgE levels, what could be the cause? My IgE level was 1800 IU/mL about six months ago and increased to 2000 IU/mL a month ago.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Once the IgE (immunoglobulin E) level rises, it may take months to return to normal. However, for some individuals, it does not decrease easily. Therefore, we need to rule out allergies by conducting an allergy test. Elevated IgE indicates the possibility of an allergy, but it does not specify the exact allergy or the causative agent. Identifying the specific allergy and the triggering substance requires further evaluation.

At the same time, it is equally important to conduct investigations related to the ear.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
