Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am very worried about my uncle’s health. He is 49 years old and has survived COVID twice in the past, but now he is dealing with serious lung problems. He has a continuous cough and feels breathless.
Could his lungs be weakened or infected due to the previous COVID infections?
He seems very weak with this pneumococcal disease, and his oxygen levels drop suddenly. Is this due to the effects of COVID or a new lung infection?
Are there any new treatments that could work for him?
What steps can we take to protect him from any long-term complications?
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Post-COVID complications, like lung damage or fibrosis (a progressive disease that causes scarring of the lungs, making it difficult to breathe), can increase susceptibility to infections, such as pneumococcal disease.
He needs to receive appropriate treatment for pneumococcal disease, typically- antibiotics and possibly supplemental oxygen.
To protect against long-term complications, managing his lung health with pulmonary rehabilitation, regular monitoring of oxygen levels, and possibly inhaled medications to help with breathing might be beneficial.
Plan for a chest X-ray if not done.
And plan for a healthy diet.
Ensure follow-up care with a pulmonologist to assess and manage any lasting effects from COVID or his current lung condition.
I hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
