Does an emergency contraceptive pill taken before unprotected sex prevent pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex with my partner a week back. Though he pulled out before ejaculation, I took an I-Pill within 24 hrs. We again had sex today, and he pulled out long before ejaculation. Do I need to take another I-Pill?

Kindly help,

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your history and understood your concerns. Emergency contraceptive pills are only effective after sexual intercourse. Still, as you used the pull-out method and are sure there is no chance of semen leaking inside the vagina, taking another contraceptive pill is unnecessary. The menstrual irregularities could be due to hormonal imbalances caused by the pill. As you took the contraceptive pill on time, there is almost no chance of pregnancy in your case. So wait, watch for your menstruation, and get the home urine pregnancy test seven days after your missed period date.

Hope this helps,

Thank you.
