Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My baby is 1 year and 4 months old. He has suffered from constipation for the last 9 to 10 months. He goes to the toilet in four to five days with a suppository. Without a suppository, he cannot try the bathroom. And after two to three days, his motion is bogged down in the anal, and it takes a long time to pass out approximately one hour. He takes a very good and enough diet and meals, but he suffers from constipation.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

With the information provided, your baby has had long-standing constipation for approximately five or six months.

  1. Was he passing motion usually during his first five to six months?
  2. Do you have any idea when he first passed the motion after birth?
  3. Does he vomit often?
  4. Is he growing well? (weight wise he seems to be within normal limits).
  5. What type of diet is he on? Please give details of the diet he takes regularly.

The above information will help to give you more appropriate advice. Such prolonged constipation at this age requires a complete workup. Get these initial tests done:

  1. USG (ultrasonography) abdomen.
  2. Ba Enema study (this is a particular test to see the lower part of the intestine for any narrowing).
  3. Stool analysis routine.

Meanwhile, give this medication:

  1. Syrup Duphalac 10 ml (Lactulose) twice daily (morning and night) for ten days.
  2. Dulcolax suppository once daily for two days (even if he passes a motion on day 1). Followup after performing the test mentioned above.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
