How to treat constipation in the third trimester of pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am at the beginning of my third trimester and I am very constipated. I think I have impacted stool. I have had this once before in my life in general not while being pregnant. Anyways, I have taken Colace and Milk of Magnesia but I still cannot get it out. I just want to know what would be safe to do at this point or what I should do. I was able to have a little bowel movement two days ago and then in that same bowel movement is when it got stuck. I have fleet glycerin liquid suppositories, I just do not know if they are okay to use or if they will solve this kind of problem. Last time I had to go to the hospital and get a full-blown enema which I have heard is something that is not okay to do while pregnant. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. At this stage, constipation is not good for you because the pressure may cause early labor or premature rupture of the membrane. You should take laxatives like two tablespoons of syrup Duphalac twice daily. Have a high-fiber diet, green leafy vegetables, and fruits in your diet. Keep yourself hydrated and drink at least three liters of water per day. I hope this information helps you. Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
