Can chronic kidney disease lead to heart failure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My cousin has chronic kidney disease and has recently been diagnosed with heart failure. The doctors suggested an angiography. I would like to get a second opinion on this matter. Has his kidney disease been related to his recently developed heart failure? Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. It is challenging to answer your question without any investigation reports. A heart condition can develop due to chronic kidney disease (due to severe water retention), but both can be separate disease processes also. Usually, when heart problems develop due to kidney problems, medicines are given initially, and a heart echocardiogram (echo) is done. I suggest you consult a nephrologist and a cardiologist with all the reports to have conclusive treatment planning.

Thank you.
