What could be the reason for fever, cough, and weakness that lasts for more than a month?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My cousin sister is suffering from high fever, weakness, and cough for more than the past month. The report for the sputum test and chest X-ray is positive which means that she is suffering from tuberculosis (I think). Currently, she is taking Paracetamol and Aciloc. Can you please guide me what is the proper treatment strategy for her and also the precautions to be taken by the family members?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your first query consult is on us!

A positive sputum test means tuberculosis. Consult a local respiratory and chest physician so that oral antitubercular medicine is prescribed with one injection of Streptomycin, this should be taken under the guidance of a doctor. Start as early as possible, she should take a healthy diet like milk, eggs, citrus fruits, vegetarian and non-vegetarian whatever. Weight must increase. Measure body temperature and note regularly. Take the following precautions:

  1. Put on a mask so nobody gets infected.
  2. The residual food if she could not eat should be thrown out.

I can suggest how to monitor the patient:

Consult your specialist doctor, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.

  1. Take the AKT-4 (Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Ethambutol, and Pyrazinamide) kit for two months then AKT-3 for at least six months.
  2. It is a contagious disease and everyone should be aware of this as her sputum contains acid-fast bacteria she is an open case.

I hope this settles your problem but consult a chest physician as soon as possible.

It was a pleasure to help you and I am looking forward to helping you further with your medical needs.

Thank you.
