Can protected sex cause transmission of Chlamydia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

If my partner has Chlamydia, and we have been having unprotected sex for over six years, is there any way to not contract it? Both of us do not have any symptoms, but he tested positive, while I am negative. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for stopping by!

I am here to provide an expert opinion on your medical issues.

Chlamydia infection in females is a very common type of infection of the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. Chlamydia is sometimes called 'a silent infection' because a majority of people who have chlamydia never notice symptoms. The signs of Chlamydia in females can include:

1. White, yellow, or gray vaginal discharge.

2. Painful intercourse.

3. Bleeding between periods.

4. Increased need to urinate.

5. Pain and burning sensation during micturition (passing urine).

6. Itching or burning in and around the vagina.

It can be transmitted sexually. If a male gets infected, then the symptoms seen are:

1. Mucus-like discharge from the penis.

2. Pain or a burning sensation during micturition.

If these symptoms are present in males, then he needs treatment with medications. This infection should be completely resolved by tablet Azithromycin (antibiotic) and tablet Cefixime (antibiotic). Consult your doctor and take the medicines accordingly.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
