Can improper sleeping positions cause chest pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing pain in my chest region (maybe my heart or lungs, but I am not sure) for the past two days. Pain comes only when I get up in the morning after sleep. Is it due to the sleeping position putting pressure on the chest or twisted or compressed chest portion while lying down or sitting? The pain is mild, and if I press further in the same position, the pain increases. During my normal routine, such as walking, etc., there is no pain. My blood sugar and BP is normal, Total cholesterol -161 mg/dL, triglycerides 82 mg/dL, HDL - 33 mg/dL, non- HDL -128 mg/dL, LDL - 111 mg/dL. I had an annual cardiac check-up four months back, TMT, echo, and consultation; all were found to be normal and good. Is this related to gastric? As I belched several times in the morning during pranayama. Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for the query. Your symptoms seem to be due to musculoskeletal causes like costochondritis. In this condition, the pain increases with movement and pressure applied over the area. Pain is more after a rest, suggesting an inflammatory cause. I suggest taking anti-inflammatory medicine such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for pain. Warm up before doing any activity. Exercise and physiotherapy will also help.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
