Why do I have severe shoulder pain after undergoing laminectomy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have severe shoulder pain. The X-ray shows that I have severe osteophytes and osteoarthritis. My neck has reverse lordosis and leans to its right. I have undergone laminectomy of L5-S1 in the past. Please help me out.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Please share your X-ray with me. Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply. I have attached my X-ray report. Kindly see it and suggest something on this.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

X-ray of the cervical spine (the attachments are removed to protect the patients identity) shows loss of lordosis with degenerative changes. That can be the cause of your shoulder pain. Kindly tell me your age, your work, and how much physical activity do you do in a day.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply. I am a 43-year-old. I worked as a nurse but retired now as I have a disability because of the failure of L5-S1 fusion. At present, I am a home-maker and most of my day goes into doing household chores.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Degenerative changes are developing early since there is not much physical activity. Are you able to walk independently? Do you have an X-ray of your lower lumbar spine? Can you please share your medical history in brief?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I can walk independently but am not able to stand for a long time. The sacroiliac joint is short on both the sides. The treatment was steroids with follow-up after every three months. Unfortunately, I do not have an image of my lumbar spine joint.

Answered by Dr. Anuj Gupta

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The problem in your lumbar spine is also due to your inactivity. Basically, your spine muscles are weak and that is responsible for early degenerative changes in your spine. You should walk everyday. Maybe, initially you will not be able to walk for a long time, but, with a regular routine, you will be able to gradually increase the distance. In the long-term, this will strengthen your spine muscles.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

The written report shows solid lumbar fusion despite micro-movement and the bilateral sacral joint has degenerated. I have started walking for 30 minutes thrice a week. I am more concerned with treatment of cervical joint area. I am not able to sleep, coughing sends a shearing force down my arm, middle and ring finger, and numbness in my little finger. I am experiencing loss of strength. Please help me out.

Hello, Welcome back to icliniq.com. l suggest you to get an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of your cervical spine. We can discuss the various treatment options available after the investigation. Meanwhile, I suggest you some pain killers to alleviate your pain and also to increase the frequency of your walking.
