Is a child with cerebral palsy considered disabled?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am attaching details of a girl. Her left side of the body is not working properly. She cannot hold or pick things from her left hand. She cannot move her left thumb. She walks on her left toes. She cannot stand straight without support on her legs.

Attached are the MRI findings. Please tell me whether this is a condition of cerebral palsy. And if yes, of which kind, and whether this girl is medically normal?

Please help.

Thank you

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

This looks like an old ischemic insult to the brain, which has led to cerebral palsy (a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move, balance, and posture) with hemiparesis ( inability to move on one side of the body). Unfortunately, this is an incurable condition, but some changes and improvements can be seen with proper and long-term physiotherapy.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Actually, this girl belongs to an orphanage where adoption takes place. A parent applied for a normal child. That is the reason I asked.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You can go through the paperwork done for adoption to know more in detail about what category of adoption the child falls into.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
