Is celiac disease a very serious disorder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am wondering if I meet the criteria for celiac disease. I had a number of blood tests and an endoscopy and have received the results. I am attaching my test reports. Do I have celiac disease? Or is it possible that it is something else? I am able to eat gluten in moderation without any issues.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

I went through your reports (the attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).

The reports strongly suggest celiac disease, a condition that is nothing but hypersensitivity to some proteins, especially gluten in food. Although your reports are highly suggestive of this condition, I would like to know the symptoms you are suffering from as clinical correlation is important to arrive at a conclusion. As Anti TTG and anti-andomyseal antibodies are very specific to celiac disease there is the least possibility of a false positive result. Note that celiac disease can be managed better. One simple thing is to follow the recommended diet and avoid eatables that contain gluten. It is possible that symptoms can be largely controlled and pathological changes in the gut can be reversed to significant levels simply by avoiding a gluten-containing diet. However, you should make regular visits to your doctor to ensure everything is fine.

I am waiting to hear about your symptoms.

Hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

In terms of symptoms, I did not actually experience any for many years, at least that I know of. I have never liked to eat bagels and dense bread as it makes me feel bloated, but have not had issues that I have noticed with lighter cakes and pastries until recently. I find that I experience bloating and loose stools after eating anything dense with gluten. I have also struggled with headaches, anemia, joint pain, indigestion, and occasional gas pain increasingly over the last five years. Please let me know if you would like additional information.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thanks for the details.

The symptoms you mentioned are typical of celiac disease. Usually, this condition is not top of mind as it is relatively unusual. Bloating, diarrhea, multivitamin deficiency due to malabsorption, low hemoglobin (anemia), fatigue, etc are some of the symptoms. Normally these symptoms are ignored for months and years before the diagnosis is made. Glad that it was identified in your case. The only best treatment is to avoid a gluten-containing diet. Do not worry much about it. Follow the diet pattern and take vitamin supplements suggested by your doctor. It should all be fine.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.
