How can cataract surgery be successfully performed in a 73-year-old patient with uncontrolled high blood pressure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am writing to seek your professional advice and expertise regarding a concerning issue with my 73-year-old father, who is experiencing significant difficulty obtaining cataract surgery due to his high blood pressure. Initially, it was recommended for one eye, but now both eyes require surgery. His vision has deteriorated to the point where he can no longer see properly. Despite being on blood pressure medication for several years and maintaining overall good health, his blood pressure remains high. His primary doctor has made changes to his medication, but his blood pressure has not yet been effectively controlled. This situation has caused him increased stress and created a vicious cycle where his blood pressure continues to rise despite the introduction of new medications. As his sight is rapidly declining, he is in desperate need of a solution. We would greatly appreciate any suggestions or recommendations you can provide to help restore his vision. Kindly help. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Let us try to reassure and calm him down by taking some steps. I recommend discussing with your doctor the possibility of starting antianxiety medication to help him relax. In addition to medication, encourage him to incorporate meditation into his routine for relaxation. It would also be beneficial to make dietary changes, such as reducing salt intake, to support blood pressure management. Regarding the eye surgery, it is crucial to bring his blood pressure under control before proceeding. Unfortunately, there is no alternative option in this case. These measures will aid in controlling his blood pressure effectively. Thank you for consulting me.
