Can cannabis smoking cause heart attack?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been hearing some mixed things about cannabis smoking and its link to heart attacks. I like to enjoy a little puff now and then. I have been wondering if this habit could be putting me at risk for a heart attack. I love enjoying life, but I do not want to do anything that could mess with my health. Can cannabis smoking lead to heart attacks?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Cannabis use has some side effects on heart health. It may cause inflammation of coronary vessels and some other vessels. Coronary circulation is the blood supply to the heart. It can cause vasospasm of coronary vessels, which can lead to chest pain, sometimes leading to myocardial infarction and death. It can cause increased platelet aggregation, which hampers blood supply. It causes increased heart rate and angina, so it is better to avoid cannabis.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
