Does balanoposthitis cause pain and burning in the penis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been suffering from candida fungal infection for the last three months. First, my doctor gave me Itraconazole 200 mg and Luliconazole cream, and the symptoms were gone completely, then after three to four days after the symptoms are back, I did the complete blood and urine tests, and all tests are normal, and my glucose level is also normal. Then I consulted Infectious Diseases, and they diagnosed me with balanoposthitis and gave me a Terbinafine tablet for one week and Nadibact plus cream for three months. The infection again disappears but the burning sensation of the penis and redness is still there. I am worried that the fungal infection will come back again after treatment is complete. Kindly give your suggestions.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. Balanoposthitis can be due to fungal or bacterial infection. All medications prescribed to you were right. The cause of recurrence can be personal hygiene. I suggest you keep the area clean and dry. Always clean it with lukewarm water and no need to use soap. If you are sexually active then your partner should be examined and treated as well. Wash your clothes in hot water. If you have active lesions at present please send the image and revert back. Currently what medications are you taking or how many days are your off medications? Because it takes time for balanoposthitis to resolve. I hope this will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Since, the time the infection was detected I have been washing the area with warm water, my wife has no infection, she is perfectly fine, and I have no infection now. Mostly every time there was a yeast infection, the ID specialist prescribed Terbinafine for one week twice daily and Nadibact plus cream for three months, and Doxycycline tablet for three weeks. I have been taking the treatment for the last fifteen days, I have no infection now so cannot send the images but I am worried that it will recur. But a burning sensation on the penis head is always there. The fungal infection is not there, a burning sensation on the penis head and maybe inflammation is still there. My tests for sugar levels are normal, urine every month I am doing it.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and there is no need to repeat the test. You can continue with a topical application for one to two months. Do not discontinue in between. You can stop oral medications but take tablet Fluconazole (Microcrystalline Cellulose and Povidone) 150 mg twice a week for four weeks (Monday and Thursday). Rest of the oral medications you can stop now. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
