Is Candida auris fatal for elderly individuals?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My grandmother, 81, in a nursing home, was just isolated for something called Candida auris. The staff suddenly wore extra gowns and masks, which made us panic. How serious is this infection? The nurse mentioned it is hard to treat, but would not give details. Is this something that could be fatal for someone her age with heart problems? How did she even catch this? We are worried about visiting her, but do not want her to feel abandoned either. Could we catch it from touching her room items?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Candida auris is hospital hospital-acquired infection. The patient might have gotten an infection from IV (intravenous) lines, catheters, or injections. Visitors are not at risk. This fungal infection is difficult to treat. It is more serious in older patients with diabetes and kidney issues. Dual antifungal treatment for 21 days is required. So, start Voriconazole (antifungal) and Cancidas (antifungal) for at least 21 days. Wishing you good health.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
