What types of cancer screening tests do women need in 30s?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 30-year-old female and have a family history of cancer. I am writing to seek guidance regarding cancer screening and its early detection. What are the different types of cancer screenings available, and which ones are recommended for people with my family history and risk factors?

When should I start considering cancer screenings, and how often should I undergo them based on my age and risk factors? Can you explain the potential benefits of early cancer detection through screening, and how does it contribute to better treatment outcomes?

Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation.

The screening will depend on what kind of cancer runs in the family. The most common cancers that run in families are breast, ovary, colorectal, and thyroid. For these people, the screening usually starts at 30 years with breast self-examination and sonomammography for the breasts.

Screening for the ovary starts at 35 years with some tumor markers, CA 125, HE4, and pelvic ultrasound. Screening for colon cancer starts at 30 years with colonoscopy and stool occult blood. There are also some genetic tests available for cancer screening. But I need to know the family history and type of cancer that runs in the family and the age they were affected.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of more queries.
