What could be the cause of blood in sputum and calf muscle pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I usually have pain in my calf muscle, so I consulted a doctor and found a vitamin D deficiency. I took three months of vitamin D tablets and a sachet. Again I did a vitamin D test and found it normal. But still, I feel pain in my calf muscle. During the current CBC test, my ESR was on little higher side. One most important issue is that I often feel blood in my sputum (more than six months). Is there any serious complication? Is it related to lung infection?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have two distinct conditions :

1. Calf pain is most likely muscle cramps (usually on both sides) due to calcium deficiency (I suggest you measure the calcium level). The other possible cause (less likely) is thrombosed veins in the leg on one side (swollen, edema and redness).

2. Blood in sputum could be due to pneumonia, TB (tuberculosis), or cancer. You should not panic as sometimes it is nothing at all. Just do a chest X-ray.

For further advice, I am willing to follow up with you and provide professional consultations.
