What are the main causes of tonsil stones?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am suffering from tonsil stones and bad breath. I have had this problem for many years. I am not able to digest food sometimes.

Please help me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query, and I can understand your concern. Bad breath is a condition caused by many factors, and chronic tonsillitis or tonsil infection is one of them. Tonsillitis, over some time, can lead to tonsilloliths (tonsil stones). I would advise you to make an appointment with your nearest dentist and then with the ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist to eliminate any other cause.

Meanwhile, I would suggest you do oral rinses with Chlorhexidine mouthwash on alternate days for about a month and maintain good oral hygiene. Brush twice daily and floss regularly. Also, clean your tongue regularly after having meals.

Thank you.
